Is Resistance to Specific Astrological Influences Possible?

The world-renowned medical psychic and prophet Edgar Cayce made the strangest comment in one of his readings. Paraphrased, he remarked that not all people were influenced by all planets - but that everyone was influenced by Jupiter (!) - and also that the astrological influence of Pluto would be increasing since the year of its discovery (1930). Astrologers may likely disagree with his statement, but it is still worthy of contemplation. I’ve been aware of Cayce’s statement for decades, and in truth, only encountered one client in thousands that appeared to be genuinely unaffected by their natal chart or transits. Although rare, one example suggests to me that this phenomenon is plausible.

Nature repeats themes all the time. For instance, most creatures have eyes, digestive tracts, generative organs, sensory mechanisms, and so forth. Living beings spanning from trees to chimpanzees also possess some form of immune systems and have evolved to be more or less immune to certain substances. For instance, goats happily ingest poison oak, and skunks are resistant to snake venom. Why wouldn’t then some humans be unresponsive to certain planetary influences, just as Cayce suggests? This is a fascinating thought! I suppose the only way to know this would be to study the influence of transits upon oneself, friends, family and clients.

In my experience as a consulting astrologer, I have frequently noticed the reverse - some people being hyper “Mercury sensitive”, or “Venus allergic”, and yet, there may be very little in their charts to explain this phenomenon. Stunning life events reliably happen either when their oddly sensitive planet is stimulated, or conversely, when that same planet by transit stimulates other planets in the natal chart. Or, each time sweet Venus creates delightfully romantic configurations for a specific client, she works in reverse. Instead of the promised love, here comes a death, argument or breakup! I call this “Venus allergic”. 

Most practicing astrologers also note “sensitivity” accompanying very precise zodiacal degrees of some horoscopes. This degree may or may not appear to have anything remarkable about it, and yet events reliably occur when the transit planets stimulate it. One might say that the individual suffers a certain “planetary allergy” to certain planets, or zodiacal degrees!  Sometimes this is triggered by a shocking event (good or bad). The degrees held by transit planets on that date remain sensitive for years to come.

Can the natal chart indicate the strength of an individual’s immune system?

How might real human physical immunity to colds and flus is shown in the horoscope? Ancient medical astrologers and Renaissance physicians knew too little about the constituents of the immune system and how it functions. This is a ripe area for our investigation. I’ve discussed the various kinds of immune cells and tentatively assigned them to zodiac signs and planets in the ‘Virgo’ chapter of my recent book ‘The Twelve Zodiac Sign Syndromes of Medical Astrology’. However, I did not include a discussion of what might astrologically suggest strong immunity in the natal chart.

Let’s start with the thymus gland. This gland is involved in the production, maturation and selection of disease fighting T-cells of the adaptive immune system and also makes hormones that assist immune function. Edgar Cayce stated that Venus governed the thymus gland. If true, it would make sense then, to assume that a strongly placed natal Venus would be one testimony of a strong immune system. We always need “three testimonies”.

It is noteworthy that Venus’ traditionally assigned metal, copper, resists pathogens, and occultists know, all too well, that “no evil can pass through copper.”  In fact, copper is essential for the development of a number of immune cells and activates immune pathways. Macrophages require copper to help them fight pathogens. But, what about Mars, the fighter? Mars’ hot response is strongly obvious in anaphylaxis, inflammation, and many immune responses. It is my belief that Mars plays a major role in immune cell activity when called to arms plus is a major player in histamine responses and cytokine storms!

Saturn may also play a part in astrological immunity, being the planet of resistance. Cornell states that Saturn governs the leucocytes, (white cells), so crucial to the immune system. He stated that these are manufactured in the Saturn-ruled spleen, (see note on Sol, below) but this is not factual, and must have been an artifact of his time (1950s).  Neither does Saturn govern the actions typical of various white blood cells (attack your enemy, eat your enemy, disband your enemy…etc.) These behaviors seem overwhelmingly Martian, or Scorpio-Aries. Immune regulation of the blood cell “troops” is the province of Virgo. FYI: The physical spleen is thought Saturn-ruled in some traditions, and Sun-ruled within others, because in part, the spleen center is believed to distribute solar prana.

In this quest, I’ve compared natal Venus, Mars, and Saturn in the charts of three persons that I’ve closely known for decades who never get colds or flus despite their observing no extra cautions and frequent public exposure. These folks appear to have outstanding natural immune resistance!  We want to test if Edgar Cayce’s assignment of Venus to the thymus gland is valid. How might we do this?

First, is Venus (thymus gland) strong by sign and aspect in the natal chart, and well placed by house - or at least without undue affliction in the birth charts of disease resistant people? Please keep in mind that any natal planet free from all hard aspects; nor located in a malefic house (6th, 8th, 12th); nor in ‘detriment’ or ‘fall’ by sign, is reasonably rare in natal charts.  Secondly, is Mars (fight) natally strong?  Third, is Saturn (resistance) strong too?

Case 1:

Venus in Aquarius in close trine to Mars in Gemini

Venus free of both hard aspect affliction and malefic house placement

Sun in Aries (disposited by Mars)

Case 2:

Venus in Libra (her domicile) sextile Mars in Sagittarius.

Venus sextile Saturn in Leo

Venus free of both hard aspect affliction and malefic house placement

Saturn in Leo trine Mars in Sagittarius

Sun on Libra-Scorpio cusp (exactly). These signs are ruled by Venus and Mars

Case 3:

While three cases hardly constitute “research”, these results are startling because they fit the

nascent theory quite well. Venus is well aspected and both free of affliction and well placed by house in all three charts. Three of three tested bug resistors born with Venus this natally strong would be difficult to randomly duplicate. Could Edgar Cayce be correct that Venus governs the thymus gland? However, this constitutes success for but one testimony. How does Venus relate with her partner Mars? Or, with Saturn?  Ideally, all three should be harmonious for antigen immune people. What happened in our tiny test?

Venus and Mars are harmonious in all charts. This too, is unusual considering that I developed my theory prior to comparing these three cases of high natural immunity. It is interesting to note that in two of three cases we see happy harmony between Venus and Mars and Saturn, all three! And, Saturn is reasonably strong in all three charts, though not without affliction, sometimes serious.

So, we have had a little fun observing different concept of “astrological immunity”. We have briefly covered the following three concepts:

*Can a rare person be immune to the influence of a specific planet(s)?

*Conversely, can some people show hyper reactivity to the transits of specific planets or selective zodiacal degrees in their horoscopes?

*Can exceptionally weak immunity be indicated in the natal chart?

Although much more research is needful, I vote “Yes” on all three questions!
